Q: What are mineral sunscreens?

Mineral sunscreens use physical filters, also known as mineral filters, which start working immediately after application. Although it is advisable to allow them to be absorbed to ensure maximum effectiveness, these sunscreens provide a physical barrier that reflects and scatters the sun’s rays, without penetrating beyond the upper layers of the skin. This makes them ideal for sensitive skin and skin prone to allergic reactions, as they are hypoallergenic and pose almost no risk of irritation.

The main characteristics of sunscreens containing physical or mineral filters include the following:

• They start working immediately after application, although they need to be absorbed to be at their most effective and to ensure their efficacy.
• They are hypoallergenic and pose virtually no risk of skin irritation.
