SULPHATES:
They are surfactants and their function is to clean. They are found in shampoos and bath gels. In this case it is advisable to use softer surfactants such as Betaines.
SILICONES:
The function of silicones is to give softness and shine. In hair cosmetics there are different types of silicones, which are classified into two groups: those that are not water-soluble, which are of lower quality, and water-soluble silicones, which are of high quality.
Silicones that are not water-soluble make a film on the hair that requires the use of shampoos with sulphates to remove them and the use of sulphates is not recommended in order not to dry out curly hair.
Professional cosmetic companies use high quality ingredients in their formulas, as their products must be more competitive and meet all the norms and quality standards established by law.
Another very important function of silicones is thermal protection against heat from straighteners and hairdryers. Without them, hairdressers would not be able to perform blow-drying techniques because the hair ends up burning. For this reason, silicones must be present in professional cosmetic products. In the case of curly hair we will not need them, unless the client wants to blow-dry, in which case we would again use products with silicones to protect the hair from the heat of straighteners or hair dryers.
DRYING ALCOHOLS:
They act as solvents in the formula and tend to dry out the hair. For this reason they have been replaced by others that do not dry out.
WAXES AND MINERAL OILS:
Their function is to give softness, shine and leave a silky touch but they have been replaced by vegetable waxes and oils that also nourish the hair.
PROTEINS:
Hair is mainly made up of proteins. Hair without protein loses nerve and has difficulty curling.
To find out if it lacks protein we will take a couple of hairs and depending on the level of stretching we will know if it needs it or not.
If the hair stretches and returns to its original shape it has an optimum level, if it stretches but does not return to its original point it needs a little protein and if it breaks directly when stretched it needs a good protein treatment.
A good option is to use one or more products in your daily routine that contain protein to maintain an optimal balance.
Hydrolysed proteins are recommended because of their smaller size and greater penetration into the hair, such as hydrolysed soy, rice, wheat, oat and quinoa protein.
VEGETABLE OILS:
Vegetable oils provide different properties and benefits to the hair.
There are oils with high absorption capacity, such as coconut oil, which deeply nourishes and is a powerful moisturiser.
Oils with less penetration act at the cuticle level, lubricating it and preventing friction and hair breakage. An example is Jojoba oil. They provide shine and silkiness to the hair.
Depending on the type of porosity of the hair, one or the other or a mixture of both oils is recommended.
MOISTURISERS:
Moisturisers create a barrier to keep moisture inside the hair and prevent dehydration. Aloe Vera and vegetable glycerine.
